Christmas is here! It’s not too late to book with Holiday Inn Darlington North!

It’s official, Christmas is here. We feel like it has been lingering for some time. Since September, there’s been a shadow of a tall, bejewelled tree in the corner, a glint of fairy lights from the corner of our eye and a faint smell of sweet cinnamon spices in the air. Since September, we have been planning and preening our festive calendar, debating whether we should dress the rooms in gold or silver tinsel and making sure our kitchen is prepared to cook for the hungry, and probably slightly tipsy, masses. And, although we don’t mean to get emotional here, we are doing this all for you.

Our guests are what matters the most to us, any time but especially, during the festive season. We know it can be tough- it’s a time for family after all! Excitable children bouncing around, breaking all their new toys while grandparents complain about how it wasn’t so commercial during their day. The turkey is still defrosting, the cat has had a fight with the wrapping paper and now shreds litter the living room like confetti. Everybody has had too much bucks fizz and baileys by 11am. Tired already? We aren’t!

We aim to do all the hard work so you don’t have to. With a varied and exciting event calendar running throughout December and January, you’re sure to find something that suits your tastes this Christmas. And if your struggling, just browse through our top 5 suggestions below!

Lumiere: the UKs largest light festival comes to Durham!

We all know Durham is renowned for its antiquity and culture; the beautiful cathedral city has a mixture of mining and farming heritage, with its economy being historically based on coal and iron excavation. Traditional architecture is represented through the UNESCO designated heritage sites, Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, and the university is the third oldest in the country.

Sounds quite ye olde, right? However, don’t be fooled by its intimidating credentials; the city has become something of an artistic pioneer, championing ambitious creative projects that showcase new talent and the city itself.

This November (between the 12th and 15th), is the turn of Lumiere, the UKs largest light festival! The event is hosted by Artichoke, a company that works with artists and public spaces to create some of the most sensational shows at the forefront of the creative scene. Lumiere was first commissioned in Durham in 2009, and returns once every other year. The 2013 festival saw 175,000 visitors attend and 27 jaw dropping installations were featured across the city, including a huge 3D elephant and an army of moving stick men who overran the Durham Miners Hall!
This year the programme is sure to be bigger and better with shows such as “The Big Dome”, which draws audiences to bask underneath specially designed coloured archways, and “Complex Meshes”, an interactive web of patterned light that continuously changes in unison with peoples movements.

To avoid disappointment, make sure to book tickets for the event and accommodation early. Find out more about the festival at To book accommodation visit, email or call 0132 532 9600.

Blast from the past- Beamish package & Agricultural show!

From Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th September 2015, Beamish open air museum is host to the annual Agricultural Show, a fun filled day recreating a traditional country show from the early 1900s!

This show is a real blast from the past and is part of a larger month long festival of Agriculture, which celebrates the rural heritage of the North East of England. The museum itself is situated in County Durham’s beautiful countryside; with 300 acres of natural landscape surrounding it, there’s plenty to admire!

The day promises to be informative and entertaining, with visitors being able to participate in a whole host of wacky activities including tomahawk throwing and archery. If you fancy taking a back seat, there’s plenty of interesting demonstrations on- you can visit the craft tent and watch the experts at work or enjoy a traditional sheep dog display. Afterwards, why not head to the beer tent for a taste of real ale whilst listening to the very impressive big brass band. Phew! We’re tired already.

If you’re interested in attending this event, we recommend you take advance of our Beamish Museum leisure break package. This special deal for two includes an evening meal in our restaurant, an overnight stay with breakfast in the morning AS WELL AS 2 tickets to the museum (valid on the event days). Book now by visiting and choose the “DISCOVER BEAMISH LIVING OPEN AIR MUSEUM BREAK”. Alternatively, email or call 0132 532 9600.

5 reasons for YOU to start planning Christmas in September…

Okay, we know we’re a little eager but you know what they say “‘if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Here at Holiday Inn Darlington North, we’re experts in throwing fun festive feasts, we’re phenomenal at putting up Christmas trees and tinsel, we’re professional party cracker pullers! As you can tell, we think Christmas is something to get excited about at any time of the year. So, this week, we want to tell you the top 5 reasons to start planning for Christmas in September.

1) Christmas Shopping
Christmas shopping can be crazy and chaotic, able to reduce even the most hardened shopper into tears of frustration. According to one Daily Mail article, 6.7 million people in the UK leave their shopping to December 24th and one in ten shoppers resort to purchasing presents at petrol stations! So, to avoid having to buy your loved ones lukewarm sausage rolls and minstrels, make sure to start your shopping now!

2) Family get-togethers
Where are you going to spend Christmas this year? With parents, parent in laws, friends, small children and animals to think about…it’s a loaded question! You could divide your time into two, three, quarters, or extend the Christmas celebrations over two days, three, a week perhaps? Pre-arrangement here is a necessity. Or, instead, you might want to fly somewhere sunny and avoid the drama…

3) Christmas lunch
We won’t suggest buying a pack of Aunt Bessie’s roast potatoes and leaving them to thaw in the freezer for 3 months, but a little foresight won’t go amiss when it comes to planning the perfect Christmas lunch. Bookatable, a company which represents more than 5,000 restaurants in Britain, said its Christmas Day bookings have gone up by more than 150% in the last few years! Make sure to book a table sooner rather than later (did we mention we do a fabulous Christmas lunch here at Holiday Inn Darlington North?)

4) The Children
Kids love Christmas. They love it even more than us. There’s a short window when the magic is LITERALLY alive; Santa does squeeze down the chimney, reindeers really do pull that sleigh and elves work all night in a tiny workshop making toys. Whilst we understand that you might not want to sign yourself up for several months of, what can only be described as, manic excitement…it’s quite nice to get the countdown started a little early.

5) Weather
To put it simply, it’s a lot easier to get the hard stuff out the way with whilst the days are lighter and warmer!

Make sure to be ahead of the game and book your festive celebrations with Holiday Inn Darlington North. You can find out more at Alternatively, view our Christmas brochure, email at or call 0132 532 9600.
